What Makes a Book Worth Reading?

It’s cucumber season.  While I was picking cucumbers and swatting deer flies today in our garden, I contemplated what makes a book worth reading.  I’m a reader, don’t get me wrong.  I’ve read thousands of books in my lifetime.  Some were good, some  were great.   Some weren’t worth my time.  Others changed my life.

Right now I’m about half way through a fascinating WWII book, THE GI JOURNAL OF SARGENT HENRY GILES.  I read it many years ago but it’s worth the time to re-read the story of an army engineer building bridges and roads across Europe.  I don’t read a lot of non-fiction but this book holds my attention.

Another book, a best seller, sits on my nightstand gathering dust.  Somehow I can’t get into it although it comes highly recommended.  Who can know what makes a book appeal to one reader but not another.   It’s comforting to know that even best selling authors aren’t appreciated by everyone.

I’ve learned it’s OK to quit reading if the book becomes tedious.

I like well-developed characters, a good plot, and a lot of good historical facts thrown in.  Sometimes, though not often, I pick up a mystery or a western.  For reasons I don’t understand, I tend to shy away from science fiction, horror and romances.

What do you look for in a book?  I’d be interested in your comments.  Wish my luck on my dill pickles–I’m trying a new recipe.
