Western Writers of America Convention at Bismarck, ND

What a great week! I’ve rubbed shoulders with historians, novelists, Spur Award winners and western writers of all genres.  James Crutchfield, 2011 Owen Wister Award Winner, shared his passion for history, research and writing.  What a privilege to hear him speak.  Dusty Richards, author of Wulf’s Tracks and finalist for this year’s Spur Award for Best Original Mass Market Paperback, encouraged all the rest of us by predicting a Spur Award ahead for any who continues to write western stories and improve his craft.  Johnny D Boggs spoke about writing for the young adult market and its many opportunities.  I’ve learned about e-publishing trends and new marketing ideas.  Opportunities to meet editors and publishers from western magazines and publishing houses were part of the convention experience as were meeting writers from all over the country who share a passion for western history.

This was my first WWA convention, but it won’t be my last.   Maybe I’ll see you next year in Albuquerque.
