She praised the historical detail, from the homestead claims to the soddies and tar-paper shacks where settlers lived. Doc Gamla, the almost-doctor and midwife, won her over fast. She also loved how the people of Nickelbo pull together through blizzards, hailstorms, and harvest season.
This was her second Candace Simar novel. She recommends the book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction with memorable characters and an authentic frontier setting.
