My grandson asked for a Kindle for his 10th birthday yesterday–and got it. Amazing to see a young boy reading an e-book about Stink the guinea pig. He liked the way he could look up unfamiliar words and change the fonts. Like most kids, Jack loves anything technological. But Stink on Kindle?
Sigh, another wake up call. I’ve repeatedly pushed the snooze button on this issue the last couple of years but a ten-year-old with a a Kindle is surely a portent for the future, my future, since I’m both a reader and a writer.
But actually, as much as I love the printed page (on real paper) I have to admit that words make the book. Not paper. Just as a softcover version still holds the same words as a hardcover. Just as a computer types the words like a typewriter used to do, like a quill and ink once did. It doesn’t matter the vehicle as long as the words are in place. The paper, as lovely as it can be, is still not the story.
My birthday is coming up next month. I think I’ll follow my grandson’s lead and request a Kindle, too. I’ll let you know what I think about it.

I just received a Kindle as an anniversary gift and I really love the convenience of it. I sometimes read multiple books at one time, so the Kindle allows me to take all of them with me wherever I go. There are some drawbacks — no reading in the bathtub 🙁 and I miss being able to dog-ear a page to come back and reread later. I haven’t figured out all the gadgets on the Kindle yet, but I know there’s a way to annotate and highlight. I think I’ll ask Candace’s ten-year-old grandson to help me. 🙂
