People are always asking me about my favorite authors.  One of my very favorites is Janice Holt Giles, a Kentucky writer, who wrote historical fiction in the 50s and 60s.  I discovered her books in the 70s while I was a stay-at-home mom to our three children.  I loved the way Giles set her early books, Hannah Fowler and The Kentuckians, in 18th century Colonial America and then followed her characters across the country in books about the western expansion.

Janice Holt Giles died in 1979, but lives on in the hearts of her readers.  I am always on the lookout for her books at Thrift stores or used book stores.  A few years back we visited her grave in Knifely, Kentucky.  Since then her log home has been restored by the Giles Foundation and is open to visitors.

I’d suggest you visit her website and include visits to the Giles Foundation House and Museum in your next Kentucky vacation.  I’d also suggest you check out the Giles books in your local library.  If you like historical fiction, you’ll love her books.  I do.
