I started out the month by doing a presentation at the Runestone Museum in Alexandria, Minnesota. The turnout was double what they expected and filled with enthusiastic readers and history buffs. What fun! We sold out our entire supply of books–that’s a first!
Then last week I started my first of nine weekly book talks at the Crow Wing Jail through the FRED (Fathers Read Every Day) Literacy Program started by Lowell Johnson. The plan is to meet three times with three different pods. In these three weeks, the pod members will read my three books and have time for a book club discussion about each one. The first week went well. We discussed ABERCROMBIE TRAIL. Tomorrow we discuss POMME DE TERRE. Wish me luck.
The highlight of my week was giving a presentation for the Alternative Education students of Long Prairie, Wadena, and Staples. What a wonderful group of kids! I’m certain many future writers were in attendance.
I’m making great progress on my next novel, BLOOMING PRAIRIE, the fourth book in my ABERCROMBIE TRAIL SERIES. I’ve set a goal to finish by May 1st, ambitious but not impossible. I’m trying to add a thousand words of new work per day. My writing friend, Bev Abear, is my inspiration–she has written several novels during November Na No Wri Mo (writing a novel in one month)–so I know it is possible to finish a big project in shorter time. Last night I dreamed an entirely different ending. I love when that happens! In my experience, it’s always good when the characters speak up and let me know the direction they want to go. It’s part of my writing process.
