This week I’m speaking at libraries in Brown County: Sleepy Eye, Comfrey, Hanska, Springfield, and New Ulm. I’ve not visited some of these towns before and so it’s a new adventure. This is where the worst of the 1862 Sioux Uprising took place and interest for my historical novels is high. We’re staying in a beautifully restored 100-year-old house converted into a B&B located in Sleepy Eye. Besides feeling pampered and encouraged, I’ve had a little extra time to work on my next novel, BLOOMING PRAIRIE.
2012 marks the 150th anniversary of the Sioux Uprising. While it certainly isn’t an occasion to celebrate, it is a good time to review our history and contemplate what might be done to improve relationships with Native Americans in our state. New Ulm plans a week of commemorative activities next August. I hope to attend some of the events. Maybe I’ll see you there.
