Escape to Fort Abercrombie. Simar, Candace (Author) Feb 2018. 280 p. Five Star, hardcover, $25.95. (9781432838188)
Set on the desolate prairie of Dakota and western Minnesota, Escape to Fort Abercrombie follows 14-year-old Ryker and his 9-year-old twin siblings, Sven and Klara, as they flee from a deadly Sioux attack on their homestead. Arriving home from school, they find their mother and baby sister gone and their father dying with an arrow in his chest. Desperate for help, they decide to walk to Fort Abercrombie, a poorly manned Civil War–era fort on the bank of the Red River, and they are joined by their faithful dog, Beller, and a neighbor boy, Johnnie. Days become a week and then more as they struggle onward, never quite sure where they are in the tall prairie grass. Finally floating down the river in the dark of night, they escape the Sioux and arrive at the fort. Simar’s (Birdie, 2014) short, repetitive sentences suit the narrative, and the struggles as the kids mature feel authentic. The bittersweet ending leaves the reader just the right amount of unfinished drama to complete the next chapter in his or her own mind. A good read.

It’s a very good review that “whets your appetite” for all your readers of previous Abercrombie books as they await the February release date. I loved the sentence about the bittersweet ending and unfinished drama. It said just enough to pique my interest to purchase the book. I eagerly await its publication!
